Fly Away Hairs

   As I stood there brushing my teeth the other morning I noticed that my hair was escaping it’s braid… again. A loop was making its way out, baby hairs were falling around my face and dangling in front of my eyes and little whispies were every. where. Sure, I’d like to wake up and find my hair smoothly tucked away. Buuuut for the most part I am happy with it just being tied back enough to where I can do the dishes and change my siblings’ (and whatever baby happens to be over’s) diaper without my hair falling into the mix… (Yes, I am about to make my hair a metaphor.)

I will never forget how much fun the lake was; such happy memories! But, as I sit here listening to my sibling’s night time shows, the dryer clanking and Mama’s voice drifting in from the kitchen from my spot on the couch, drinking tea and talking to you… I am so glad to be homeee.

   There are days when I need my hair to be more “contained” or in place; some days it’s fun to get a little fancy and do something different and pretty. Most days though, I find something almost relaxing about having it in a messy, slept in braid (that is just messy enough to get away with… I think…). It’s loosened enough to be comfortable, I don’t have to worry about accidently messing it up (it’s doing a fine job on it’s own) and I can focus on 500 other, more important, things that are not my hair. 

   Sometimes in life (here comes the metaphor) we want everything to fit perfectly into this neat little package… we have a plan for exactly how this, or that, should go. Then when the whispies start popping up we get mad and frustrated and give up, take the whole thing out and start over. 

These pretty, little, purple flowers made my heart smile!

   But those whispies, those imperfections, are a part of you. You are not perfect. I am not perfect. So trying to pretend we are is useless… and a waste of time.

   Often those imperfections (though we may be acutely aware of them) can oddly enough make us feel more comfortable, more ourselves. They are a part of who we are. Should we let them define who we are? No. Do we want to relive or dwell in our weaknesses or mistakes? I’m guessing “no” is your answer too… We know they are there and we see them everytime we look in the mirror. We see them as such a big part of who we are and what other people see when they look at us… truth is? They probably don’t even notice. That fly away hair that keeps poking your eye is invisible to them. They are focused on their own image. And GOD? Well, He gave you that cowlick and those baby hairs and He loves you regardless.

   So no matter what your “hair” may look like today remember that it is beautiful. Keep focusing on the important things and don’t spend all of your time trying look a certain way to convince others (or yourself) that you “have it all together.” Embrace you imperfections and rest in your Heavenly Father’s grace.
